Anonymize court judgments without touching the reasoning or the ruling
A judgment travels further than its parties expect: internal case-law databases, training for new court staff, answers to information requests, academic commentary or cooperation with another court. Every one of those uses needs the same things removed: who sued, who testified, where each of them lives and which car hit which. What matters, the legal reasoning and the ruling, has to arrive in full.
In Spain, plans are arranged with our sales team.
The difficulty is that party details are not confined to the heading. They come back in the facts, in the assessment of evidence, in quoted testimony and even in the signature block. Anonimatum finds them with its own AI models running on EU servers, lets you add your own patterns for reference numbers and identifiers, and lets you review every match before anything is applied.
If the decision arrives scanned with stamps and signatures, OCR runs only on the pages that need it. And when the document stays in an internal workflow where you still need to know who is who, the «Justice» profile replaces names instead of blacking them out, with a map that lets you reverse the change.
How to anonymize a judgment in Anonimatum
- 1
Upload the decision
Native PDF, scanned PDF or Word. Scanned pages go through OCR first, and only those pages.
- 2
Switch on the right options
GDPR anonymization for names and licence plates (traffic cases), Addresses for homes and places of events, plus ID number patterns.
- 3
Keep public details visible
With reverse anonymization or the whitelist, the court, the reporting judge and the cited legislation stay in the text.
- 4
Review and download
Check each mark in the preview and download a PDF in which the redacted text no longer exists under the box.
Fictitious document
Before and after: judgment in a road-accident claim
Fictitious judgment from an invented court. Parties, witness, counsel, address and vehicle registration are removed; the court, the reasoning and the order remain.
IN THE COUNTY COURT AT NORTHBRIDGE
Claimant: Ms Lucy Fernley, represented by Mr Andrew Pole of counsel.
Defendant: Mr Oliver Lloyd, of 14 Almond Close, Northbridge.
FACTS: the vehicle registered AA00 AAA crossed into the opposite lane at the industrial estate roundabout.
The witness Mr Ralph Penn stated that the defendant failed to give way.
REASONS: the witness evidence, consistent with the police report, establishes that the defendant driver was solely at fault.
ORDER: judgment for the claimant; the defendant shall pay £4,850 plus statutory interest.
IN THE COUNTY COURT AT NORTHBRIDGE
Claimant: (redacted), represented by (redacted) of counsel.
Defendant: (redacted), of (redacted).
FACTS: the vehicle registered (redacted) crossed into the opposite lane at the industrial estate roundabout.
The witness (redacted) stated that the defendant failed to give way.
REASONS: the witness evidence, consistent with the police report, establishes that the defendant driver was solely at fault.
ORDER: judgment for the claimant; the defendant shall pay £4,850 plus statutory interest.
The court, the facts without anyone identified, the reasons and the sum awarded are kept, because that is what gives the judgment value as a precedent.
What changes compared with redacting judgments by hand
Every mention, not just the first
A witness's surname quoted in the third legal ground is marked just like the one in the heading. One forgotten name is enough to re-identify the parties.
Licence plates and places
In traffic and liability cases, a plate number or the exact address of an accident identifies someone as well as a name does. The GDPR anonymization option, which includes licence plates, and the Addresses option treat them as personal data.
Pseudonyms that keep the initial
The «Justice» profile swaps «Lucía Ferrer» for another name with the same initial throughout, shifts dates and keeps companies consistent, so the judgment still reads naturally.
Whole series in one batch
For a collection of decisions on the same subject, a server-side batch applies one configuration to every file and returns a ZIP.
FAQ: anonymizing court judgments
Can the judge's name stay visible?
Yes. Add it to the whitelist or use reverse anonymization to list what must remain: court, reporting judge, court clerk or cited legislation. Which names stay is a decision for your court or your publication policy.
What about handwritten signatures and stamps on scans?
The «QR codes and digital signatures» option covers e-signature stamps and verification codes. For a handwritten signature, draw a zone over it or use a figure pattern that repeats on every page.
Does an anonymized judgment fall outside the GDPR?
Only if no one can be identified by reasonably likely means, including through context. In high-profile cases the facts alone may point to someone, so review those indirect clues before publishing.
Do scanned pages count the same?
Pages that need OCR count double towards your page allowance. That is why OCR is applied selectively, only to pages without a text layer.
Where are the decisions processed?
On servers in the European Union, with Anonimatum's own AI models and no external large language model APIs. Politeia Soft holds Spain's ENS security certification at MEDIUM level, with Anonimatum in scope.
