Remove the password from a PDF
Know the password? Get an unlocked copy you can archive, merge or anonymize. It does not crack passwords; it simply removes the one you already have.
Banks, accountants, insurers and public bodies increasingly send password-protected documents: statements, certificates, policies, official notices. That makes sense in transit, but once the file is inside your organization the password gets in the way. Someone has to dig it up every time the file is opened, it goes missing when the person in charge changes, and it complicates any further work on the document.
Unlock PDF does one thing: if you know the password, it produces a copy without it. It is not a tool for getting around someone else's protection, and it does not guess or crack passwords. Think of it as the step in between, before you file the document in your records system, merge it into a dossier with Merge PDF or run it through the anonymizer before sharing.
Because the file holds information someone wanted protected, where you unlock it matters. Anonimatum processes it on our own servers in the EU (OVHcloud, France and Poland) with no third-party services involved. It is handled in memory and returned straight away, without being stored. The group history shows the operation and file name, which admins can purge according to the configured retention period.
How to remove a PDF password
- 1
Open Unlock PDF
In the Anonimatum app, go to the “PDF tools” menu and pick Unlock PDF.
- 2
Upload the PDF and enter its password
Use the password you already open the document with; without it, the file cannot be unlocked.
- 3
Download the unlocked copy
It comes back instantly and the file is not kept on the server.
Security
Your PDFs never leave our servers in the EU
The same safeguards as the anonymizer, also for merging, converting or compressing.
Our own servers in the EU
Every tool runs on Anonimatum servers in France and Poland (OVHcloud). No third-party services or APIs: LibreOffice and OCR run on our own server.
We don’t keep the document
The PDF is processed in memory and returned straight away. Conversions use a temporary folder that is deleted when they finish.
History under your control
Group activity (operation and file name) is deleted according to the retention your administrator sets, from 1 to 365 days. The audit log only keeps the SHA-256 fingerprint.
Access with your account
You sign in with your Anonimatum account, with two-step verification, and each use is deducted from your plan’s PDF tools quota.
ENS Medium category
Politeia Soft is certified under Spain’s National Security Framework (ENS), Medium category, and the platform is designed for the GDPR.
Next to the anonymizer
Merge, reorder or convert, then anonymize or pseudonymize the result on the same platform before sharing it.
Before you start

It only removes a password you know. It does not break protection.

Anonimatum servers at OVHcloud (France and Poland), with no external APIs.

Remove PDF password FAQ
Can I unlock a PDF if I don't know the password?
No. Unlock PDF only removes a password that you enter. It does not try to guess or break it: if you don't have it, ask whoever sent you the document.
Where is the file processed?
On Anonimatum's own servers in the EU (OVHcloud, France and Poland). It is not sent to third-party services or external APIs. It is processed in memory, returned immediately and not stored; the audit log records only its SHA-256 fingerprint, never the content.
Do I need an account? Does it use my quota?
Yes. Unlock PDF is part of the Anonimatum app, which requires an account (two-step verification available). Each use counts towards your plan's PDF tools quota.
Why remove the password if I can already open the PDF?
Typing it every time gets old, and you often need to keep working on the file: merging it into a case file, reordering pages or anonymizing it. An unlocked copy removes that friction, and if the result leaves your organization you can lock it again with Protect PDF.
Is it safe to keep the PDF without a password?
That depends on where it lives. In an internal repository with access controls it is usually reasonable. If it is going outside the organization, protect it again or, better still, anonymize the data the recipient does not need first.
Take back control of your protected documents
Remove a password you already know on European servers and keep working on the PDF in the same platform.
